Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (26 - 30) won their first series in June after defeating the St. Lucie Mets in game three by a score of 7 - 1. In the win, centerfielder C.J. McElroy Jr. hit his first professional home run over the left field wall in the eighth inning. McElroy went 3 - 5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Palm Beach's offense came to life this game producing seven runs off 11 hits and got some help with two St. Lucie errors. Eight of the nine guys in the lineup reached base, and seven of them had a hit. Four Beach Birds had multi hit games.
On the mound for the Beach Birds was Trey Nielsen, starting his tenth game of the season. Nielsen had another successful night, pitching his fifth quality start of the season. In his seven complete innings, he allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. At one point, he struck out three batters in a row.
St. Lucie scored with the help of two major leaguers who are on rehab assignments. Dilson Herrera doubled followed by a single from Travis d'Arnaud. After Herrera scored, Palm Beach turned a double play to end the inning. The Beach Birds turned three double plays this game, one short of their season record (4).
In the bottom of the second, Carson Kelly lead off the inning with a single and moved to second of Derek Gibson's first hit of the game. Gibson was forced out at second on a fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners for McElroy. After St. Lucie's pitcher, Logan Taylor, fielded McElroy's ground ball, he threw a wild pitch to his first baseman which ultimately scored Kelly and Gibson. Once the Cardinals had this lead, they never lost it.
Brett Wiley brought in the next two runs for Palm Beach on a single in the fifth and sacrifice fly in seventh. The momentum continued in the seventh as Luke Voit singled up the middle to score McElroy.
In the bottom of the eighth on a 1 - 1 count with two outs and Gibson on first, McElroy sent the ball over the left field wall for the first time in his professional career. The two run shot cushioned the lead for Palm Beach in their series finale victory.
Kevin Herget entered the game for the last inning to finalize the win for the Cardinals. After Corey Littrell faced four batters in the eighth, Herget did the same, allowing one hit and struck out two.
The Cardinals will have an off day on Sunday, June 7, and will return to Roger Dean Stadium to continue their home stand with a four game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays. Game one of this four game series will begin on Monday, June 8 with the first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
