Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (29-27) used another dominant pitching performance on Saturday night, tossing a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over the Clearwater Threshers (27-29) at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees swept the three-game series, keeping themselves in the playoff hunt.
Jonathan Holder led the charge for Tampa. The right-hander dealt six scoreless frames, allowing a pair of one-out singles in the third. The Mississippi native tallied hit one batter, tallied five strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Holder threw 44 of his 62 pitches for strikes and pitched his fifth straight quality start.
The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against RHP Victor Arano. Abiatal Avelino chopped a leadoff double down the left field line and Tyler Wade followed with a walk. A double-steal placed runners at second and third and Miguel Andujar drove home Avelino with a groundout to third. Mike Ford then singled into left field, scoring Wade.
Arano (0-7) settled down for Clearwater and retired 12 consecutive batters. That streak was interrupted in the fifth when Ericson Leonora hit a towering home run over the left field wall, giving Tampa a 3-0 lead.
A perfect bullpen performance took the Yankees the rest of the way. RHP Giovanny Gallegos pitched a 1-2-3 seventh. RHP Luis Niebla followed with a flawless eighth. RHP Andury Acevedo picked up his first save of the year with Tampa, striking out two batters in a scoreless ninth.
Leonora (2-for-3) hit his sixth homer of the year. Ford (1-for-3) picked up his 26th RBI of the season.
Following an off day on Sunday, the T-Yanks remain home to begin a four-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads. Monday's matchup will feature an MLB Rehab start by RHP Ivan Nova. Jupiter will counter with RHP Jose Adames (1-0, 1.64 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
