INDIANAPOLIS -- Shortstop Luis Cruz homered for the second time in as many games and drove in three runs as Indianapolis battered the Louisville Bats 8-4 Friday before 13,558 fans at Victory Field.
It was the Tribe's second consecutive win over the International League West champions.
Andrew McCutchen and Jason Delaney chipped in with three hits apiece for Indianapolis. McCutchen had a triple and a two-base hit while Delaney added a pair of doubles.
Indians starter Ross Ohlendorf (5-4) picked up the win and Marino Salas earned his fourth save with three innings of scoreless relief.
Former Tribe first baseman Kevin Barker had a pair of homers for Louisville.
Indianapolis took a 1-0 first-inning lead against left-hander Matt Maloney when McCutchen stroked a one-out triple and scored on a bloop single by Neil Walker.
The Bats went ahead 2-1 in the second. Barker led off with his 19th home run of the year, mashing Ohlendorf's 93-mph fastball over the wall in right. Alvin Colina and Rob Mackowiak had back-to-back base hits, and Colina stole third to put runners at the corners. One out later, Colina came home on Paul Janish's line single to center.
The Tribe regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Consecutive doubles by Matt Kata and Delaney tied the score, and when Cruz slammed an 0-1 breaking pitch beyond the left field fence, the Indians went up 4-2. The homer was Cruz's third of the year and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Louisville got a run back in the third when Barker cranked a two-out, bases-empty homer to right.
A three-run fourth inning extended the Indians' lead to 7-3. Delaney led off with a double and scored on Cruz's single to center. Cruz moved to second on Ohlendorf's sacrifice bunt and after an infield out, came home on a double by McCutchen. McCutchen stole third and scored when the throw from home sailed into left field.
After a single by Walker and walks to Ronny Paulino and Steve Pearce loaded the bases, right-hander Justin Mallett replaced Maloney and got the final out. Maloney (11-5) yielded 10 hits, seven runs - all earned - a pair of walks and a strikeout in three and two-thirds innings.
Ohlendorf went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. In the sixth, former Boston Red Sox right-hander Craig Hansen made his Indianapolis debut. Colina greeted Hansen with a leadoff double and came home two outs later on Janish's single to make it 7-4.
The Indians scored a run in the seventh off Todd Coffey, who replaced Mallett. Kata singled with one out and then stole second and third. One out later, Cruz fanned. But when the ball skipped past the catcher for a wild pitch, Cruz was safe at first and Kata crossed the plate to close out the scoring.
Salas relieved Hansen in the seventh. The Dominican right-hander allowed one hit and struck out five of the ten batters he faced.
Friday's crowd was the third-largest at Victory Field this season.
Saturday's game is the last home game year of the year for the Indians. The Tribe will start Jimmy Barthmaier (3-1) against Louisville's Daryl Thompson (0-0) in a matchup of right-handers.
Five End-of-the-Year player awards will be given away during a special pre-game ceremony. The Tribe's August Player of the Month and 2008 Most Valuable Player will also be recognized. Fans can register to win one of 30 game worn jerseys to be awarded by Indians players and coaches immediately following the game.
White River State Park will also play host to HANK-FM's annual SkyConcert. Following the game fans will be invited down to the Victory Field playing surface for the fireworks show, which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.
The contest airs on WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 5:40 p.m.
