LOVES PARK, Ill. - Evan McArthur fueled rallies in consecutive innings on Saturday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat Lake County, 7-5.
McArthur had a two-run single in the sixth inning and hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the RiverHawks the go-ahead runs, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,777 at Road Ranger Stadium.
John Wagle hit his first home run for Rockford. Lake County's Josh Short and Jeff Dunbar also homered.
The RiverHawks never trailed, but the Fielders challenged for the lead from the sixth inning on. In the sixth, Short tied the game at 1-1 with his 14th home run of the year. In the bottom of the inning, Rockford rallied for three runs on McArthur's hit and Wagle's two-out RBI single.
In the top of the seventh, Dunbar led off with a home run and the Fielders scored three times tie the game at 4-4. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Travis Scott blooped a single to short right-center field, Pat O'Sullivan singled to left and McArthur homered to left off reliever Ryan Falcon (3-2) to give the RiverHawks a 7-4 lead.
Rockford starter Brett Durand allowed just four hits, but got a no-decision. He left in the seventh inning after he followed the Dunbar homer with a walk. Reliever Manny Olivares (2-0) allowed the inherited run to score and permitted the tying run in the seventh, but won in relief. Jon Huizinga entered in the eighth inning with a run already in and the possible tying runs in scoring position. He got out of the eighth on two grounders - first baseman Rich Austin turned the first into a double play when runner Juan Valdez strayed too far and was caught from behind on a 3-6 play - and recorded the last six outs for his second save.
The series finale is at 4:05 p.m. Sunday. Costcutters sponsors Family Day. The first 500 fans receive a large-format Rich Austin baseball card. After the game, kids get to run the bases for free and players sign autographs. The Illinois Railway Museum and Midwest Rail Junction sponsor free train rides for all ages.
