Glens Falls Dragons News Release
Glens Falls, NY - For the second week in a row, a Golden Eagles player has received the Pitcher of the Week award for the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL). Following last week's award winners Nick Gonzalez (Southern Florida) and Neil Fryer (Siena), Derek Mazzio (St. Louis) has earned this week's award. The award is based upon the games pitched between June 20th and June 26th.
Although Mazzio has yet to record a decision on the season, he has pitched quite impressively compiling a 1.47 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 18.1 innings. His ERA ranks sixth in the league while his strikeout total ranks first. With only four walks allowed so far, the Missouri native's strikeout-to-walk ratio stands at a remarkable 6.5.
This past week, Mazzio made two valuable starts against Cooperstown on Tuesday, June 21st and against Mohawk Valley on Sunday, June 26th. At home versus Cooperstown, the St. Louis Billikens pitcher dueled with Hawkeyes starter Collin Blankenship (South Alabama) into the seventh inning yielding only one run, one walk, and three hits, while striking out seven to set the stage for a Golden Eagles win with the winning run scored in the eighth inning. This past Sunday, Mazzio faced Mohawk Valley at East Field and went five strong innings allowing only one run on six hits while striking out eight. Glens Falls would go on to win the game in the bottom of the tenth inning on an Anthony Pisani (Southern Maine) walk-off single.
