
PGCBL Names Player and Pitcher of the Week

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce its' weekly award winners for the second week of the 2011 season. The awards are based on games played between June 20 and June 26.
Elmira's Aaron Hopper (Marietta) and Justin Lacy (Longwood) are the co-recipients of the PGCBL Player of the Week award. Glens Falls starting pitcher Derek Mazzio (Saint Louis) has been chosen as the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week.
Aaron Hopper and Justin Lacy were two of Elmira's offensive catalysts in a 4-1 week for the Pioneers which saw the team leap from worst to first in the PGCBL West. The two are the second and third Pioneers to be honored by the PGCBL. Elmira's David Bishop (Miss. State) was the PGCBL Player of the Week in Week 1. Hopper batted .421 (8-for-19) and drove in seven runs. Four of his eight hits were doubles and he scored four times. The Marietta College rising junior totaled at least one hit in all five games for the Pioneers and he had three multi-hit and two multi-RBI games. Hopper collected three hits, two runs and two RBI in two midweek victories over the Amsterdam Mohawks. Against Watertown on Fri., June 24, he drove in three runs on two hits and scored twice. The next night, the Wheelersburg, Ohio, native ripped a two-run double in a 5-4 triumph. He finished the week with a 2-for-4 performance at Cooperstown. Hopper leads the PGCBL in hits and he is tied with teammate Justin Lacy and Josh Anderson (Yavapai) of Glens Falls for the league lead in RBI.
Justin Lacy started all five games for Elmira and batted .389 (7-for-18) with seven RBI. Lacy scored five runs and slammed three doubles. He had at least one hit, one run and one RBI in four of five contests. The Longwood University rising junior registered one multi-run, two multi-hit and two multi-RBI games. Defensively, he was errorless in 39 overall chances at first base. Lacy went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and a run scored in a 5-0 victory over Amsterdam on Tues., June 21. The following evening against Amsterdam, he scored on an Aaron Hopper RBI double and then ripped an RBI single in his next at-bat in a 6-5 triumph. The Glen Allen, Va., native scored twice, belted a two-run double and drove in three runs altogether at home against Watertown on Fri., June 24. Back at Dunn Field versus Watertown on Saturday, Lacy led the Pios with three hits and his RBI single in the seventh inning brought in the eventual winning run in a 5-4 victory. Through Sunday's games, Lacy is tied with teammate Aaron Hopper and Josh Anderson of Glens Falls for the league lead in RBI. He is also tied with teammate Ryan Normoyle (Wash., Md.) for second in the PGCBL in hits.
Derek Mazzio is the third Golden Eagle to receive a weekly honor from the PGCBL. Starting pitchers Nick Gonzalez (South Florida) and Neil Fryer (Siena), both of Glens Falls, were the Co-Pitchers of the Week for Week 1. Mazzio started twice for the nationally-ranked Glens Falls Golden Eagles in the span of five days. He posted a 1.69 earned run average over the two starts however he did not record a decision. The right-handed pitcher struck out 14 batters in 10.2 innings and held opponents to a .229 batting average. Mazzio was the only starting pitcher in the PGCBL to make two starts last week. The Saint Louis University rising sophomore took the East Field mound against Cooperstown on Tues., June 21. He yielded one run on three hits over five and one-third innings and struck out seven. Mazzio retired 16 of the 21 batters he faced and allowed Cooperstown only five base runners. The St. Louis, Mo., native returned to the mound on Sun., June 26. He scattered six hits over five innings, allowed one run and struck out seven against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, the second-place team in the PGCBL East. Mazzio forced Mohawk Valley to strand seven runners on base and he recorded three-straight outs in his final frame after the first three batters of the inning reached base. Through Sunday's games, Mazzio is first in the league in strikeouts (26) and sixth in earned run average (1.47).
