The Pioneers took a five game winning streak into play on Sunday afternoon as they traveled to Cooperstown to take on the Hawkeyes. Aaron Zaleznik (U. Mass.) got his second start of the year for Elmira coming in with a 1-0 record. Zaleznik would hold the Hawkeyes of the scoreboard through five innings.
The Pioneers would start off the scoring in the third inning as Geoff Jimenez (Florida Atlantic) would put Elmira up 1-0 with an RBI double off the center field wall. With a runner on David Bishop (Mississippi St.) Blasted his fourth long ball of the year, a two run home run over the left field fence putting Elmira on top 3-0. Zaleznik would run into trouble in the sixth inning as he would give up three runs to the Hawkeyes with the big blow being a two run home run that would get Cooperstown within one run 3-2.
Cooperstown would tie up the game two batters later with an RBI Double. Zaleznik would escape any further damage. Zaleznik pitched six innings allowing 3 runs while striking out five batters. Elmira would turn to their bullpen as Jay Ferri (URI) would come on in relief. Ferri would allow the go ahead run to score in the seventh after a pick off attempt would find its way into right field allowing Cooperstown to go on top 4-3. John Koch (Arkansas St.) would also throw an inning of relief for Elmira striking out two batters. Bishop along with Aaron Hopper (Marietta) and Ryan Normoyle (Washington College) would combine for six of Elmira's eight hits.
The Pioneers will return home as they kick off a three game homestand starting with the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Monday, June 26th at 7:05 P.M. The Pioneers will then take on the Glens Falls Golden Eagles Tuesday and Wednesday night.
