Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - Right-hander Trevor May struck out eight and allowed just two hits through 7.1 innings to lead the Clearwater Threshers (18-17, 57-47) to a 2-1 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals (19-17, 48-57) Friday night in game one of a four-game series at Roger Dean Stadium.
Arquimedes Nieto (1-3, 3.99 ERA) held Clearwater to just four hits and struck out six through 6.1 innings before departing with two men aboard in the seventh, eventually getting charged with those runs and ultimately his third loss of the season. The fifth-year righty took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his previous start July 23 at Daytona and has now given up four runs, three earned, on just five hits in his last 13.2 innings.
Palm Beach was held hitless until the fifth inning but did manage to score a run in the second, as Rainel Rosario drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout and came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Xavier Scruggs. The run, which would hold up as the only tally of the night for the home team, barely scored in advance of Alan Ahmady being thrown out trying to advance to second.
Nieto set down nine straight Threshers' hitters into the seventh inning before issuing a one-out walk and allowing a follow-up single, signaling manager Luis Aguayo to call upon right-hander Chris Corrigan from the bullpen. Two straight singles by Troy Hanzawa and Jiwan James tied the game and loaded the bases for Jeremy Barnes' game-winning groundout to third, finalizing the 2-1 final score.
The Cardinals put runners on in the eighth and ninth but were unable to push across the tying run, with Luis De La Cruz getting thrown out at third to end the eighth and Ahmady's potential rallying hit being snagged by a diving Hanzawa at short to end the game.
May (8-6, 3.39 ERA) gave up two hits, four walks, one run and struck out eight through 7.1 innings while lefty Andy Loomis pitched a scoreless 1.2 frames to earn his second save.
Right-hander Richard Castillo (0-3, 8.38 ERA) will make the start tomorrow for Palm Beach in game two against righty Jonathan Pettibone (8-7, 2.81 ERA) and the Threshers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium for a game that includes a Girl Scout Sleepover and movie.
