Max Montes, Paxton Geisel Notch League Honors
February 15, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CHICAGO - Dubuque Fighting Saints forward Max Montes has been named USHL Forward of the Week, and goaltender Paxton Geisel has been named USHL Goaltender of the Week for Week 20 of the 2021-22 season. Montes scored three goals in two games, and Geisel dominated in a victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday night.
Montes' award marks the sixth time that the Fighting Saints have captured USHL Forward of the Week honors, as he joins Stephen Halliday, who won it twice, Connor Kurth, Ryan Beck and Tristan Lemyre. The St. Cloud State commit scored a clutch, game-winning shorthanded goal to cap the comeback against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night. Then, on Saturday, he posted another two goals in a dramatic 3-1 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
In 81 games as a Fighting Saint, Montes has scored 19 goals and 16 assists. He is one of six Saints to have scored ten or more goals on the season. Four of his ten tallies this season have come on the power play, and two more have come while shorthanded, which is tied for the second-most in the USHL.
Geisel picks up his first league honor after making 27 saves on 28 opportunities en route to his 16th win of the season on Saturday night. Those 16 wins rank third-most in the league. Since participating in the 2022 BioSteel USA Hockey All-American Game on January 17, where he picked up the win, Geisel has racked off four consecutive wins with a 1.00 GAA and a .960 save percentage to go alongside. Those numbers lead all goaltenders in the league in that span by a landslide.
The Saskatchewanian has had a stellar season with the Fighting Saints (16-6-2/2.82/.907), which has included a personal nine-game winning streak. That streak was the second-longest in the Fighting Saints' Tier I history behind Art Brey. Geisel was ranked 28th among North American goaltenders at the midterm by NHL Central Scouting. He is committed to Denver.
The Dubuque Fighting Saints have captured league honors eight times with six awards for forwards, one for defensemen (Samuel Sjölund), and one goaltender.
