Mavs Send Pair to Futures Game

June 26, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Tyson Gillies and Alex Liddi have been a big part of the present for the Mavericks, helping the team win a first half title for the first time since 1993. In a few weeks, they will officially be part of the future.

Both Gillies and Liddi have been named to the 11th annual XM All-Star Futures Game, where they will both play for the World Team. This year's contest will take place Sunday, July 12 in St. Louis.

Gillies, a British Columbia native, will be one of four Canadians on the roster. Liddi will be the lone player hailing from Italy.

Being named to the futures game is the most recent accolade for Liddi. The 20-year-old is having a breakout season and is a candidate to capture the league's triple crown. This past Tuesday he was the starting third baseman for the California League All-Star team in the annual contest against the Carolina League.

Although Gillies did not make the all-star squad, he certainly was a viable candidate. The centerfielder is among the league leaders in average, on-base percentage, stolen bases, and runs scored.

Gillies and Liddi are the first Mavericks to play in the Futures Game since Mike Saunders participated in the 2007 contest. However, Gillies and Liddi won't be the only players with Maverick ties at the event. 2007 Mavericks pitcher Chris Tillman, now with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, will be playing for the United States.
