Nuts Pitcher Craig Baker Shines at All Star Game Modesto Nuts relief pitcher Craig Baker was selected to the 2009 California League All Star team and pitched the ninth inning as the Cal League defeated the Carolina League All Stars 2-1 in a dramatic 10-inning contest June 23 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore, California.
Baker took the mound to start the ninth inning for the California League, faced three batters and struck out two of them. Baker threw only seven pitches in his All Star appearance, and all seven pitches were strikes. Playing in Lake Elsinore was a bit of a homecoming for Baker, who is a native of Hemet, California, located just a few miles from the All Star Game location.
"I was very excited to be an All Star this year," said Baker. "It's an honor to be picked, but I really try not to pay much attention to those kinds of things. It's good to get excited, but it's important not to take it too seriously. Going home is nice when I get the chance and it was great to see my family during the All Star break. Having the game right in Lake Elsinore this year was perfect."
Lancaster JetHawks player Jon Gaston, a two-time California League Player of the Week, led off the bottom of the 10th inning and hit a solo walk-off home run to win the All Star Game for the Cal League in dramatic fashion.
