Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (March 5, 2014) - Trevor Kell scored two goals and added an assist and Andrew Courtney also scored twice as the Missouri Mavericks defeated the host Quad City Mallards 5-2 Wednesday night . The defeat was the seventh place Mallards' third in a row (26-18-8, 60 points) while the victory was the league-leading Mavericks' (36-16-2, 74 points) third straight.

The Mavericks, who emerged from the first period on top 1-0 after Courtney scored the first goal of the night from the right wing circle 11:22 into the contest, expanded their lead to 3-1 by outscoring the Mallards 2-1 during a wild 61-second, three-goal flurry in the second period. Kell started the fireworks by doubling the Missouri lead on a 2-on-1 rush at 6:12 of the second. Just 17 seconds later the Mallards' Thomas Frazee crashed the net to cut the gap to 2-1. Only 43 seconds after the Mallard opener, Mike Ramsay's blast from the top of the right wing circle reestablished the two goal Missouri lead. Chris Greene narrowed the margin to 3-2 in goalmouth scramble at the 16:19 mark.

The Mavericks, however, would put the Mallards away with a pair of third period power play goals. Kell expanded the Missouri advantage to 4-2 from close range at 2:40 of the third. Courtney capped off the win by burying the puck from the left wing circle with just 18 seconds remaining.

The Mallards return to action on home ice Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Arizona Sundogs. Friday evening, courtesy of Genesis Health System, both Iowa football great Chuck Long and Miss USA 2012 Nana Meriwether- who will drop the puck for a ceremonial opening faceoff- will meet fans and sign autographs. Friday is also the season's final $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.
