Mavs Power Past Bees, 5-1

HIDALGO, Texas -Sebastien Thinel had three points on a goal and two assists, and Ed McGrane had a pair of goals as the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, 5-1, Saturday night at State Farm Arena. Two of the biggest off-season acquisitions for the Mavericks shined in the win and Missouri moved to 2-0-0 for the first time in franchise history. Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger was again solid between the pipes and stopped 28 of 29 shots in his second win. The Mavericks will continue their six-game road trip by travelling to Arizona for three games next week against the Arizona Sundogs.

"It was a great team effort, this Rio Grande Valley team works extremely hard," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "The guys just kept going, and we feel we wore them down by the second half of the game."

The Killer Bees scored just 16 seconds into the game on a goal by Aaron Lee, but the first shot on Effinger proved to be the only one to get by the Mavericks' goaltender. Effinger stopped the next 28 shots and has stopped 57 of 59 shots in his first two games.

The Mavericks turned on the offense after the slow start and tied the game on a power play goal by Brandon Coccimiglio. He was assisted by Thinel and Ryan Jardine. Next it was McGrane to give the Mavericks the lead with just under two minutes remaining in the first period. He took another nice feed from Thinel and beat the Bees' goaltender B.J. O'Brien.

Dale Mahovsky scored his second goal in as many games and the only goal in the second period. The Mavericks' rookie snapped a wrist shot from just above the slot and lifted it over the shoulder of O'Brien to give the Mavs a 3-1 lead.

In the third period, the Mavericks' scoring duo was at it again as both McGrane and Thinel scored to give the Mavs the 5-1 win. Dave Pszenyczny, Kris Hogg and Brad Good earned assists in the third period.

The Mavericks outshot the Bees 34-29 in the game and finished 1-4 on the power play. Rio Grande Valley was unable to convert on the power play for the second straight night finishing 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

The Mavericks will play three games in Arizona next week and finish their season-long road trip on November 4 against the Wichita Thunder. The Mavericks home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Thunder. Missouri plays home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
