Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Jesse Schultz scored once and added two assists and Danny Battochio made 33 saves as the Rapid City Rush defeated the host Quad City Mallards 5-1 in the Mallards' season opener Saturday night.
Schultz triggered a run of five straight Rapid City goals with a drive from the right wing circle at 7:36 of the first period.
The Rush struck for a pair in the second period to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Andrew Smale was credited with the second Rapid City goal when Mallard goaltender David McKee stopped Schultz's initial bid only to see the rebound carom home at 5:30 of the second.
Anthony Perdicaro's wrist shot just under five minutes later sailed past McKee into the top corner.
Two rush goals in just over two and a half minutes early in the third period ended Mallard comeback hopes.
Carl Hudson- at 2:31- and Konrad Reeder- at 5:09- both scored on odd man rushes.
The Mallards did deny Battochio's shutout bid when Shane Lovdahl scored Quad City's first goal of the season from just inside the blue line with 2:29 left in the third period.
The Mallards next play at home on Friday, November 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems.
November 4 will be Vetarans Appreciation Night as the Mallards honor those who have served in the armed forces in what will be the Flock's final home game before Vetarans' Day.
The same evening will also see the Mallards hold their annual teddy bear toss.
Fans who bring a new, unwrapped stuffed animal to the November 4 game can toss it onto the ice after the Mallards' first goal in
that tilt.
Those teddy bears will then be donated to Quad City Festival of Trees.
