SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - Kevin Cooper's goal with 11 seconds remaining broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Mississippi RiverKings to a 4-2 win over the Missouri Mavericks Sunday afternoon at DeSoto Civic Center. Cooper scored at 19:49 in the third period on his second power play goal of the game as the RiverKings moved to 11-9-2 on the season. Jeff MacDermid and Nick Sirota each scored power play goals for the Mavericks as they fell to 8-10-1 and remain in sixth place in the Northern Conference.
MacDermid opened the scoring at the 8:52 mark of the first period on the power play. He was assisted by Mike Burgoyne and the Mavericks held the lead through the first. Both teams tallied seven shots in the opening frame.
Cooper scored the first of his two goals in the second period and tied the game 1-1. Mississippi outshot the Mavericks 14-8 in the period.
Missouri took the lead less than five minutes into the third period on an unassisted power play goal by Nick Sirota. At the 10:52 mark, Adam Smyth tied the game for the RiverKings on assists from Matt Summers and Dane Marshall.
The game remained tied at two until the final minute. Missouri's Andrew Davis took a penalty for holding at 19:29, and 20 seconds later, Cooper scored the game-winning goal. Just four seconds after the Cooper goal, Bobby Chaumont tallied an empty netter to make the score 4-2 before the final buzzer.
Missouri's loss marked just their second loss in the last six games, but for the fourth time this season, the Mavericks couldn't win their third straight game after winning two in-a-row.
Missouri will head home for a game on Tuesday, December 8 against the Rapid City Rush. Tickets are available by calling (866) 443-8849 or visit MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
