High Desert Mavericks News Release

After a seemingly momentum-building comeback win Friday night, the Mavs returned home and fell flat in the follow up, losing 9-4 against the Lancaster JetHawks Saturday night.

It was far from a pretty game for the Mavs, who ended up issuing seven walks against three strikeouts. They also committed three errors and ran themselves out of scoring opportunities with three outs on the bases.

Maikel Cleto walked the first batter of the game, and after a base hit the JetHawks already had runners at the corners with none out. On the next play, Shaver Hansen mishandled a ground ball, allowing a run to score. Another followed on a double play, as the JetHawks took an early 2-0 lead.

The Mavs were able to tie it in the bottom of the inning when Jake Shaffer provided a two-run, two-out double.

Lancaster regained the lead in the the third when Brian Pellegrini crushed a home run out to left field. However, Hansen answered with an opposite field in bottom of the inning to tie it again.

The game turned in Lancaster's favor in the fifth. With two on an none out, Bryce Lane laid down a sac bunt, and Cleto threw it away to bring home the go-ahead run.

Now with a runner at third and two down, Cleto walked Brandon Wikoff. Brandon Barnes stepped up next and hit a three-run homer just over the right field fence to put the JetHawks in control at 7-3.

Shaffer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to get the Mavs within three. That ended up not only being the final run of the night, but also the final hit for the Mavs.

Lancaster put the game away with two more in the seventh on RBI singles by Wikoff and John Curtis.

The Mavs failed to muster any kind of comeback. Shane Wolf worked three perfect innings, and David Carpenter worked around to walks to end the game in the ninth.

Kyle Greenwalt (7-6) took home the win for the JetHawks, allowing four runs over five-plus innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Cleto (3-8) lost for the fourth straight start, as he continued to struggle at home, giving up seven runs over four innings. Although he allowed just four hits, he walked four and did not register a strikeout.

The Mavs will look to bounce back when they meet the JetHawks Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Come join the Mavs for Faith Night, with a special performance by New Method. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. for all the festivities. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
