Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(ADELANTO, CA) - Brandon Barnes belted a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning as Lancaster scored four runs in the frame en route to a 9-4 victory over High Desert at Mavericks Stadium Saturday. Barnes' blast came on the heels of Brian Pellegrini's solo home run in the top of the fourth.
The JetHawks struck first with two runs off Mavericks starter Maikel Cleto in the opening frame. Andy Simunic drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single from Brandon Wikoff. Barnes reached on a fielding error by High Desert's Shaver Hansen, which enabled Simunic to score. Moments later, Wikoff scored on a double play off the bat of Pellegrini and Lancaster held a 2-0 edge.
High Desert immediately answered with a pair of runs off JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt in the bottom of the first. Jake Shaffer's two-run double evened the score at 2-2.
After the two teams traded runs in the top of the fourth, the JetHawks took control of the game with four runs in the fifth. Mark Ori singled to start the inning and Jose Altuve followed with a walk. Bryce Lane attempted a sacrifice bunt, which caused Cleto to make an errant throw to first. The error allowed Ori to score and Altuve to reach third. Later in the inning, Cleto issued a two-out walk to Wikoff and Barnes followed with a three-run blast that sailed over the right field wall.
Lancaster added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and cruised to a 9-4 triumph. Greenwalt (7-6) earned the win by pitching five innings, in which he allowed eight hits and four earned runs with a walk and six strikeouts. Cleto (3-8) took the loss for High Desert.
With the win, Lancaster improved to 26-28 in the second half and 49-75 overall. The JetHawks sit three games in back of first place Lake Elsinore in the California League Southern Division Second Half standings. The loss dropped High Desert to 28-26 in the second half and 65-59 overall.
