Quakes Blank Storm to Get Back on Track

August 22, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lake Elsinore, CA - One night after a disheartening loss wrapped up a 1-6 home stand, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes used good pitching and good defense to shut out the first-place Lake Elsinore Storm, opening their six-game road trip with a 2-0 win at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.

Garrett Richards gave the Quakes exactly what they needed, while Christian Scholl, Manaurys Correa and Eddie McKiernan pitched in to hold the Storm to just five hits over nine innings, helping the Quakes earn their league-leading tenth shutout of the year.

Richards retired the first ten batters he faced and only got into one jam in his five scoreless innings. With the bases loaded and one out, Richards got Cody Decker to ground into an inning-ending double-play, as third baseman Dillon Baird turned in nice play to keep the Storm off the board.

Jon Townsend finished with two hits and scored both of Rancho Cucamonga's runs, as Mike Trout brought him in with a run-scoring single to make it 1-0 in the third. Townsend scored again on a grounder by Alberto Rosario, making it 2-0 over Storm starter Anthony Bass in the fifth.

Scholl worked two innings, facing the minimum, before turning it over to Correa, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth. McKiernan, who got roughed up in Friday's loss to High Desert, turned the page and worked a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save of the year. After retiring the first two hitters in the ninth, McKiernan gave up back-to-back hits, as Padres' rehabber Oscar Salazar singled, then moved to third on an Allan Dykstra single. With the winning run at the plate, McKiernan got Decker to pop up to Angel Castillo in right field, ending the threat and securing the shutout.

Richards (2-1) scattered three hits, while walking one and striking out five over five innings in the win.

Bass (7-7) took the loss, falling to 0-4 against the Quakes this year.

The Quakes (27-27, 66-58) move to two games back of Lake Elsinore in the South Division with just 16 games to play in the regular season. Orangel Arenas (6-3) looks to continue the success on the mound, as he throws for the Quakes on Sunday. Storm lefty Juan Oramas (6-2) will go for Lake Elsinore, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm.

The Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening the final home stand of the regular season on Friday, August 27th. Friday night is another $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy $1 Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola Products and $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches, thanks to KFROG 95.1. Gates open at 6:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
