Mavs earn 5-3 win
July 24, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Maikel Cleto turned in one of his best pitching performances of the year and a four-run sixth inning guided the Mavs to a 5-3 win in San Jose Friday night.
The Mavs were listless at the plate through their first five innings. Although they had drawn a few walks, they didn't collect a hit until a one-out single by Johermyn Chavez in the fifth.
However, Cleto was keeping the Giants quiet as well, keeping the game scoreless.
The first two men each drew walks from Scott Nestor (2-2) to begin the sixth, and Kyle Seager followed with a single to extend his hit streak to 29 games and load the bases.
After Edilio Colina struck out, Dennis Raben drew another walk to bring home the game's first run. Eddy Martinez-Esteve then ripped a two-run single to left to make it 3-0.
Chavez topped the rally with a two-out RBI single to make it a four-run game.
The large lead didn't last long, as the Giants responded with three runs in their next at bat. Francisco Peguero led off with a triple, and Ehire Adrianza followed with a bloop single to get the Giants on the board.
Two batters later, Johnny Monell belted a home run to center field to pull the Giants within one.
It was the lone mistake for Cleto, who stayed solid on the road this year. Cleto (3-4) lasted a season-high eight inning, besting his previous mark by two full innings. Although Cleto allowed nine hits, he didn't walk anyone and struck out six.
The Mavs added another run in the eighth when Raben and Martinez- Esteve registered back-to-back doubles off David Quinowski.
With a runner at first and two outs, Wendell Fairley took a borderline 3-2 pitch from Wes Littleton for ball four to put the tying runs on base.
Littleton ran the count full to Drew Biery, but blew a fastball by him to end the game and earn his fifth save.
Now 5-0 at Municipal Stadium, the Mavs will look to stay undefeated in San Jose Saturday night at 6 p.m. Live coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
