August 12, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Unable to do much offensively during their four-game losing streak, the Mavs hit three home runs and jumped out a seven-run lead before defeating Bakersfield 7-3 Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Johermyn Chavez led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-4 and falling a double shy of the cycle. He collected a triple in his first at bat in the first inning and scored on a passed ball.
Eddy Martinez-Esteve then followed with a towering home run to give the Mavs an early 2-0 lead.
Chavez hit a two-run homer off the scoreboard in the third to double the Mavericks lead. Two batters later, Rich Poythress went the opposite way for his 25th homer of the season.
Kuo Hui Lo began the fourth with a double, and two batter later, Denny Almonte brought him home with a sac fly. Poythress collected a sac fly as well in the next inning to make it 7-0.
After failing to score through the first five frames, the Blaze got it going at the plate in the sixth. They started the inning with four straight hits, including RBI singles by Mike Bianucci and Cody Podraza.
With two on and none out, Jake Wild prevented any more runs from scoring and keep it at 7-2.
However, Wild would surrender a home run the next inning when Erik Morrison went deep to pull Bakersfield within four.
The Blaze put runners at the corners with none out in the eight, but Blake Nation used a strikeout and a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
Starting pitcher Jon Hesketh earned his second straight win. He kept the Blaze scoreless through five, but was pulled in the sixth after allowing three hits.
Hesketh (2-3) would be charged with two runs and seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Blaze pitcher Wilfredo Boscan had a rough night, allowing seven runs over five innings. Boscan (9-10) gave up eight hits, including a season-high three homers. He struck out six with one walk.
The Mavs will look to win the series against the Blaze Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. It's the final Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday of the season, with all beers on sale for $2 from 6:05 p.m. through the end of the fifth inning. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
