Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

The Quakes got incredible pitching for a second straight night, coming within one out of their second consecutive shutout, instead, settling for a 7-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Wednesday night at The Diamond.

Orangel Arenas, a tough-luck loser in his last start to Lake Elsinore, fired six innings of one-hit baseball, his best outing of the year.

Arenas (6-2) was replaced in the seventh, by reliever Jose Perez, who allowed just one hit over two scoreless innings of work.

In the ninth, Quakes' reliever Baudilio Lopez took over and struggled with his command, issuing a pair of walks and firing a wild pitch. With one out and runners at second and third, Robert Lara's sac fly to right field put Lake Elsinore on the board at 7-1, bringing their scoreless streak in the current series to an end at 17 2/3 innings. Lopez recovered to get Allan Dykstra to ground out, ending the game.

The three Quakes' hurlers combined to hold the Storm to just two hits, a season-low for Rancho Cucamonga pitching.

The Quakes popped a pair of early home runs to take the lead against Storm starter Juan Oramas (6-2). Luis Jimenez crushed a two-run homer to left, his ninth in a Quakes' uniform, making it a 2-0 game in the first. Angel Castillo ripped a solo shot to left in the second, his 17th of the year to put the Quakes in front 3-0.

A wild pitch scored Dillon Baird in the fourth, as the Quakes extended their lead to 4-0 against reliever Hayden Beard.

The Quakes got two in the eighth, as Gabe Jacobo plated on a passed ball and Richard Cates scored on Castillo's third hit of the game, an RBI single to left field to make it a 6-0 contest.

Jacobo capped the Quakes' scoring in the ninth, driving in Mike Trout with an RBI hit to right field, putting the Quakes in front 7-0 against Storm closer Brad Brach.

While the Quakes (25-20, 64-51) are now two up on the Storm, they are still just one game up on second-place High Desert in the South Division Second Half Standings.

Ryan Chaffee (5-5) will take the mound on Thursday night, as the Quakes look for the three-game sweep of the Storm. Lake Elsinore will counter with lefty Nick Schmidt (6-9), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Quakes return to The Epicenter on Friday night, opening the home stand with game one of a three-game series against the Stockton Ports. The first 1,500 fans through the gates on Friday night will receive a Torii Hunter Bobblehead Doll, thanks to All-Star KIA and KFROG 95.1. Gates open at 6:05pm and game time is 7:05pm. Great seats are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or get them online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Wednesday night...Go Quakes!
