June 30, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The High Desert Mavericks come home for the first time since the All-Star Break, as they open up a three-game series against the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino. The series begins this Tuesday night, July 1st at Mavericks Stadium. Don't forget that the Mavs will be celebrating Independence Day on Thursday, July 3rd with the biggest Fireworks Extravaganza in the entire High Desert, courtesy of Valley-Hi Toyota Honda. The game begins on Thursday at 7:05 and the fireworks will follow immediately after the completion of the game. Tickets are still available by calling the Mavericks at 246-MAVS! The Mavs will then hit the road again and face Lake Elsinore in a three-game series followed by a three-game set in San Bernardino. The Mavs have had a number of roster and personnel moves in the last week that fans may not be aware of. LHP Pete Smart, who led the Mavs in victories and innings pitched last season decided to retire after being on the Disabled List with left arm problems for the last few months. IF Mark Ernster was released by the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. Ernster has been injured since mid-June with a problem in his left knee. OF Jeremy Frost was called up from the Helena Brewers of the Short-Season A Pioneer League on Friday night. Frost homered in his first at-bat and has hit safely in all three games since joining the Mavs. Pitching Coach Bill Champion has resigned as Pitching Coach of the Mavericks and will go home to attend to family business. Champ will be replaced by John Curtis who was hired last week by Brewers Minor League Farm Director Reid Nichols. Curtis spent the weekend working with Champion in Lake Elsinore and will officially take over July 1st. The Mavs are 3.5 games out of first place in the second half South Division title hunt. We hope to see you at Mavericks Stadium this week as your Mavs finally come home. Tickets are available for this week's action at 246-MAVS!
