JetHawks Take "Load-ed" Win from Sixers
June 30, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
San Bernardino Ca. â John Castellanos and three relievers escaped a series of jams in a 4-2 win over the Inland Empire 66ers at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Lancaster (44-37, 5-6) earns a split of the four game series, and has taken q12 of the 17 meetings this season. The 66ers (41-39, 5-5) remain in second place, but fall to 2 ½ games behind Division leading Lake Elsinore.
Castellanos did not figure in the decision, but stranded 10 runners on base through five innings, while allowing just two runs. He left the bases loaded in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
Both Sixers runs came in the first. Dustin Delucchi, Hunter Brown, and Shin-soo Choo opened the inning with consecutive singles, and John Castellano doubled for a two run lead. Greg Jacobs was the fifth straight batter to reach as he walked to load the bases. Castellanos then settled down and retired three straight batters without allowing any further runs.
The bottom of the order loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, on a single, walk, and hit batter. But Castellanos escaped with a tie score, as Delucchi and Brown struck out, and Choo grounded to first.
Castellanos left the bases loaded for a third time in the fifth, when Ismael Castro flied to center with two outs.
The JetHawks tied the game in the second on a Sergio Santos home run, his seventh of the season, and Mike DiRosa's single to score Jay Garthwaite, who doubled following Santos' homer.
Lancaster loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, and unlike the Sixers, would cash in. Garthwaite's walk against reliever Jared Thomas forced home Dan Uggla who singled to lead off the inning. Two batters later Ryan Rowland-Smith plunked DiRosa to score Santos.
Thomas (4-3) was charged with both eighth inning runs in taking the loss. He pitched a total of two innings, giving up two hits, while walking three batters.
Corby Medlin (2-1) picked up the win with tow innings of scoreless relief.
After an off day Monday, the JetHawks open up a three game series at home against the San Jose Giants. Justin Wechsler (8-4, 4.06) starts the series opener, against Brion Treadway (4-4, 4.02) for the Giants in a 7:15 p.m. game.
The JetHawks next home game will be July 1st against the San Jose Giants. That day will also be the annual baseball clinic from 9 a.m. to noon. All kids 16 and under must pre-register for the camp by calling (661) 726-5400.
