INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks (12-8-2) won their sixth straight game, 7-3, over the Arizona Sundogs Friday night in front at Independence Events Center. Missouri had seven different goal scores in the win and also had their highest offensive output of the season at home with the seven goals. Podge Turnbull had a goal and three assists to lead all scorers and six Mavericks' players had multiple point games. Missouri's six-game win streak is tied for the second longest streak in franchise history.
Missouri scored early and often in the first period and opened up a 5-1 lead. Andrew Courtney started the scoring at the 6:34 mark when his wrist shot ricocheted off a couple legs and beat Sundogs' goaltender David Brown. The goal extended Courtney's goal-scoring streak to four games and his point streak to six games. Sebastien Thinel also extended his respective point streak to six games when he put the Mavericks up 2-0. Arizona had a power play goal to cut the Mavericks' lead to 2-1, but Missouri quickly answered on Turnbull's lone goal. His power play goal gave the Mavericks a two-goal lead, but Missouri wasn't finished as they scored a pair of goals in the final minute of the first period. John-Scott Dickson and Brandon Smith gave the Mavericks a 5-1 lead through the opening 20 minutes. The five goals tied a team high this season for most goals in a period.
Both teams scored a pair of goals in the second period and the Mavericks held on to the four-goal lead. Former Maverick Derek Leblanc scored on a penalty shot at the 4:37 mark, but the Mavericks answered on Evan Vossen's third goal of the campaign. Jason Morgan scored the Sundogs third and final goal of the game at 15:32 of the second period. Missouri again answered when Kenton Miller scored just 31 seconds later to finalize the scoring at 7-3.
No goals occurred in the final period and the Mavericks finished off their sixth straight victory. Missouri was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Sundogs scored a power play goal on their only chance of the evening.
