INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Brett Hammond had two power play goals and Todd Paul tallied three assists as the Missouri Mavericks won their fourth straight game, 4-2, Sunday evening over the Texas Brahmas at NYTEX Sports Center. Missouri has now won eight of their last nine games and extended their lead over the Tulsa Oilers to four points in the Northern Conference standings. Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger improved his record to 7-1-0 with Missouri by stopping 32 of 34 shots and only allowed two power play goals in the game.

Toby Lafrance gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at the 11:43 mark of the first period when he scored an even strength goal although it was close to a power play goal as two Brahmas had just exited the penalty box. Karl Sellan earned the first assist on the play and Paul had the first of his three assists. The lead lasted until AJ Gale notched the first of two power play goals for the Brahmas at the 18:04 mark of the first. Kevin Seibel and James Hiebert assisted on the play that sent the game tied 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Missouri outshot the Brahmas 19-6 in the first period, but it was the Brahmas that took the lead early in the second period. Jordan Cameron scored his 19th of the season at the 1:51 mark on assists from Tyler Skworchinski and Jason Deitsch. The power play marker for the Brahmas proved to be the last puck that would get by Mavericks' goaltender Effinger.

Hammond took over for the Mavericks when he scored the first of his two power play goals at the 9:14 mark of the second on assists from Simon Watson and Paul. Hammond gave the Mavericks the lead at 3-2 when he beat Brahmas' goaltender Joe Palmer at the 17:16 mark. Missouri took the lead into the second intermission and held the edge in shots at 27-16.

The Mavericks stayed strong in their defensive zone in the third period to hold off a Brahmas charge. Texas outshot Missouri 18-5 in the third but Effinger was equal to the task on each and every shot. Braden Walls scored for the Mavericks with an empty netter at the 19:59 mark to give the Mavericks the 4-2 victory.

Missouri finished 2 for 9 on the power play and stopped 4 of 6 man advantages for the Brahmas. Texas ended up winning the shot battle at 34-32, but it was Missouri that skated away with their fourth straight victory and eighth victory out of their last nine contests.

Missouri will return home Tuesday for Youth Jersey Night when they face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. The first 1,000 kids 12 and under will receive a free Mavericks youth jersey. Call (866) 443-8849 for tickets or visit www.MissourMavericks.com for more information.
