Mavericks Rout Quakes 12-4

August 18, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

A stellar pitching performance gave the Mavericks a win over Rancho Cucamonga Tuesday night. On Wednesday, it was time for the offense to shine in a 12-4 rout over the Quakes.

Five Mavericks collected at least two hits in the 16-hit attack. Rich Poythress went 3-for-6, collecting four RBI's and hitting his 29th home run of the season.

Making his Maverick debut, 19-year-old Ji-Man Choi had a night to remember, going 3-for-4 with three RBI's.

Choi put the Mavs on the board in the second. In his first plate appearance in the California League, Choi sent a sac fly to left field to make it 1-0.

The Quakes got on the board and took the lead with a pair of runs in the third. A wild pitch tied the game, and Luis Jimenez followed with an RBI single to put the Quakes in front.

The Mavs responded with three in their next at bat. Jake Shaffer tied the game with an RBI double, and Choi broke the tie with a two- run single.

The Mavs blew the game open in the sixth, putting seven runs on the board. Maximo Mendez drew a bases loaded walk, and Kyle Seager followed with a sac fly to make it 6-2.

With two down, the Mavs scored five more times. Edilio Colina hit an RBI double, and two batters later, Poythress smashed a bases- clearing double. Shaffer finished the rally with an RBI single.

The Quakes would score twice the seventh, but it wasn't nearly enough to get them back in the game. Poythress capped the scoring and his nice night with a homer to left-center in the eighth.

It wasn't all about the offense, though, as Kenn Kasparek gave the Mavs another good start. Kasparek (8-4) was charged with four runs-- three earned--over 6.1 innings. After giving up the pair of runs in the third, he retired the next 10 straight before being lifting in the middle of the seventh. Kasparek struck out five and walked two.

After looking good through his first three innings, Ryan Chaffee started to fall apart as his start went on. Chaffee (5-6) allowed seven runs and seven hits over 5.1 innings. He's now 0-3 in five starts against the Mavs.

The Mavs now have the same overall record as the Quakes and will look to surpass them in the Wild Card standings Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com at 6:45 p.m.
