Errors Prove Critical to JetHawks in 3-1 Loss

Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(STOCKTON, CA) - Once again the pitching was strong for both teams as the JetHawks played the Ports Wednesday night. While the JetHawks struggled to hit, an error opened the door for two Stockton runs as the Ports beat the JetHawks 3-1. Lancaster falls to two games out of first place with 19 games left in the regular season.

An error actually benefitted the JetHawks in the first inning. Jay Austin opened the game with an infield single. A poor pickoff throw allowed Austin to scamper all the way to third base. Brandon Barnes then dropped a bunt down the first base line that brought Austin in and gave the JetHawks a 1-0 advantage.

The lead lasted until fourth inning. JetHawks starter Leandro Cespedes didn't allow a hit until Ports catcher Yusuf Carter homered with two outs in the fourth to tie the game. In the next frame, the Ports had a runner at third base with two outs. Jermaine Mitchell hit a ground ball to shortstop Jonathan Villar. Villar threw wild to first, leading to a pair of Ports runs.

Villar was involved in the other most exciting play of the game. He was at third base with no one out in the fourth inning. With Major League Baseball's stolen base king Rickey Henderson watching from the Ports dugout, Villar tried to steal home. He took Stockton pitcher Ben Hornbeck by surprise, but Hornbeck recovered in time to throw Villar out on a close play at the plate.

The JetHawks continue their road trip in Stockton Thursday night. Ross Seaton (6-10) will pitch for Lancaster against the Ports' Justin Marks (2-1). The game begins at 7:10 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 7:05.
