Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks announced today that they have agreed to terms with rookie forward Darren Nowick and rookie defenseman Kevin Tansey on standard player contracts for the 2016-17 season. Additionally, the Mavericks have signed Yuri Terao to a tryout agreement.

"Darren showed a lot when he was with us last year. He hunts the puck well, plays with a lot of speed and works very hard so it will be exciting to see how he develops. And Kevin is a big, physical defenseman who can clear the front of the net. He has the potential to be a real steady defender for us," said Mavericks head coach John-Scott Dickson.

Nowick, 24, joined the Mavericks last season following the completion of his collegiate career at Northern Michigan University. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward registered seven points (2g, 5a) in 13 regular season games before adding another three (2g, 1a) in 10 Kelly Cup playoff games. Nowick debuted with a three-point effort (1g, 2a) in the Mavericks' 6-3 win over Allen on March 16, 2016.

"After finishing the year with the Mavericks last year, I knew I wanted to come back. The organization and the fans were first class and I'm just thankful for the opportunity to be back for my rookie season.

"I think our goal is simple; to win a championship," said Nowick.

With Northern Michigan, Nowick, a native of Long Beach, Calif., piled up 75 points (34g, 41a) over 140 games. He led the team in points (32) and assists (18) as a senior last season. Nowick was also named to the All-WCHA Second Team last year thanks to 24 points (11g, 13a) during conference play.

Tansey, 23, comes to the Mavericks after finishing his career at Clarkson University with six points (4g, 2a) and 16 penalty minutes in 34 games as a senior. Those 34 games pushed his total to 151 played for the Golden Knights which rank second all-time in school history. A 6-foot-4, 225-pound defenseman, Tansey chipped in 34 points (12g, 22a) over his four years at Clarkson.

Following the completion of his senior season, Tansey signed an amateur tryout with the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators and logged nine penalty minutes in 11 games.

"The Mavericks give me the opportunity to join a good team, one with a lot of potential, for my rookie season. I want to improve my game, perform at a high level and help this team win a championship," said Tansey.

Terao is a 21-year-old native of Nikko, Japan who has one year of experience in North American hockey. Last season he ranked second in goals (18) and fourth in points (40) for the USHL's Waterloo Blackhawks. As a 20-year-old Terao played the 2014-15 season with the Nikko Icebucks of the professional Asia League and finished eighth on the club with 17 points (10g, 7a) in 29 games.

A 5-foot-8, 180-pound winger, Terao has also participated in the last three New York Islanders Mini Camps.

"Yuri is an intriguing prospect. He skates well and competes at a high level so I'm excited to see what he shows during training camp," said Dickson.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity with the Mavericks. I'll do my best to make the team and hope to be in the lineup for the first game on October 15," said Terao.

Nowick, Tansey and Terao join Andrew Courtney, Bryce Aneloski and Dan Correale on the Mavericks' preseason roster.
