Mavericks Rally from 8-0 Deficit with 16 Straight Runs

June 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

After getting in an 8-0 deficit, it looked like the Mavericks first half was going to end on a sour note. Instead the offense made it a night to remember, scoring the last 16 runs of the game to defeat the Lancaster JetHawks 16-8 Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Neither team scored in the first two innings before the JetHawks erupted for eight runs in the third. Federico Hernandez hit the first pitch of inning for a home run. David Flores stepped up next and delivered a homer as well to make it 2-0.

The JetHawks would later load the bases, and Lee Cruz cleared them with one swing for a grand slam to put Lancaster up 6-0. With two out, Hernandez would hit his second homer of the inning--a two-run shot to give the JetHawks a seemingly comfortable eight-run lead.

Hernandez's second homer was the parting shot for Mavericks starting pitcher Jake Wild, who had a second straight rough outing. Wild gave up eight runs and eight hits, including four homers, over just 2.2 innings.

The Mavs rose to the challenge and started the comeback with four runs in the bottom of the third. Rich Poythress opened the scoring with a two-run double. Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Johermyn Chavez each hit RBI doubles as well.

Juan Diaz and Kyle Seager hit back-to-back homers to start the fourth inning, pulling the Mavs within two runs.

That spelled the end for Lancaster pitcher Shane Wolf, who was bounced after three-plus innings, allowing six runs and 10 hits.

The Mavs then took the lead with an eight-run fifth. Chavez led off the frame with a homer, and Juan Diaz's two-out RBI double tied the game.

Andy Simunic committed a vital two-out error to keep the inning alive, as the next six men all reached safely. Edilio Colina gave the Mavs their first lead with an RBI single, and the Mavs would score five more times to take a 14-8 lead.

Making his Maverick debut, catcher Blake Ochoa topped a great night with a two-run homer in the seventh to finish the scoring. Ochoa hit a two-run single during the rally in the fifth as well and ended up going 3-for-5 with four RBI's.

After Wild's early exit, the Mavericks bullpen picked up the slack, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings and allowing just four hits. Stephen Penney (3-2) took the win, tossing two scoreless frames with three strikeouts.

The JetHawks bullpen, on the other hand, gave up 10 runs over five innings of work. Ashton Mowdy (1-3) surrendered six runs and five hits over 1.2 innings to pick up the loss.

The Mavs finished the first half with a 37-33 record and will hope to build on Saturday night's win after the All-Star Break. Second half play begins Thursday, June 24 at home against the Inland Empire 66ers at 7:05 p.m. Join the Mavericks for a Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday, with all beers on sale for just $2 from 6:05 p.m. until the end of the fifth inning.
