Offensive Outburst Sparks Mavericks Past JetHawks

June 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(ADELANTO, CA) - The High Desert Mavericks exploded for 14 runs in a three-inning stretch en route to a 16-8 victory over the JetHawks at Mavericks Stadium Saturday in the 2010 first half finale for both teams. The Mavericks erased an 8-0 Lancaster advantage and salvaged a split in the four-game series between the two clubs.

The JetHawks used the long ball to build an 8-0 lead in the top of the third. Federico Hernandez belted two home runs in the inning and Lancaster got a grand slam from Lee Cruz as well as a solo shot from David Flores in the eight-run frame. All eight runs were scored off Mavericks starter Jake Wild.

But High Desert sliced the lead in half with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Juan Diaz and Kyle Seager each hit solo homers off JetHawks starter Shane Wolf to help High Desert close the gap.

After scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth, High Desert seized control of the contest with an eight-run inning in the bottom of the fifth and took a 14-8 lead.

Meanwhile, High Desert's bullpen shut down the JetHawks offense as Cheyne Hann, Stephen Penney, Blake Nation and Wes Littleton combined to toss six and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Penney (3-2) earned the win for High Desert. Reliever Ashton Mowdy (1-3) took the loss for Lancaster.

The loss dropped the JetHawks to 23-47 for the first half of the 2010 campaign. High Desert improved to 37-33.

With the first half now complete, the JetHawks will be off for the All-Star Break until Thursday when they host the Stockton Ports in a four-game series to begin the second half.
