Kansas City Mavericks News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Missouri Mavericks ended a two-game losing streak and a five-game winless streak against the Wichita Thunder with a 4-3 win at INTRUST Bank Arena Sunday evening. Missouri (28-17-4) got two goals from Patrick Schafer and goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 36 of 39 shots for his 23rd win of the season. The Mavericks scored the first four goals of the game and staved off a Wichita comeback in the third period. John-Scott Dickson and Brandon Smith each had multiple point games as the Mavericks extended their lead over Rapid City and Quad City to three points.
"A great response by the guys to put the last two games behind us and come out and play a very solid road game," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman.
The Mavericks had a patient approach in the first period and it paid off as they earned a power play when Thunder forward Erick Lizon was sent to the penalty box for slashing at the 2:59 mark. Mavericks' forward Dickson scored a power play goal when he redirected a shot by Tristin Llewellyn and beat Thunder goaltender Adam Russo. The goal was Dickson's 22nd of the season tying him with Ed McGrane for the team lead. Defenseman Lukas Bohunicky added the second assist and the Mavericks held on to the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the opening period.
Schafer gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals through the first 6:40 of the second period. First, he snuck the puck through the five hole of Russo at the 2:18 mark. Schafer then took a shot from behind the goal line that bounced off the leg of Russo and into the back of the net. He was assisted by Brandon Smith on both goals as the Mavericks took a three-goal lead.
Just over four minutes later, Andrew Favot scored on a partial breakaway to give Missouri a 4-0 lead. He was assisted by Dickson, but the Thunder scored with just over five minutes remaining in the period to cut the Mavericks' lead to three goals. Chris Greene lifted home a rebound for his fourth goal of the season on assists from Matt Summers and Francis Trudel.
Wichita poured on the pressure in the third period and Colin Hemingway made it a 4-2 game at the 9:34 mark. RG Flath scored to make it a one-goal game with 2:36 remaining in regulation. The Thunder put up 23 shots in the final frame including a handful of shots with the goaltender pulled in the final minute, but Effinger and the Mavericks were equal to the task and shut the door on Wichita's comeback bid.
Missouri finished 1-for-2 on the power play and the Thunder was 0-for-1. Wichita outshot the Mavericks 39-23.
