Kansas City Mavericks News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Missouri Mavericks fell to the Wichita Thunder Sunday Evening, 4-2, at INTRUST Bank Arena. Thunder forward Matt Robinson had a pair of goals and goaltender Bryan Hogan stopped 33 of the Mavericks' 35 shots for the win. Kris Hogg and Brandon Smith had the markers for Missouri and goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 39 shots in the loss. Missouri will travel to Tulsa for a game Tuesday night against the Oilers at BOK Center.
Missouri jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Hogg's seventh goal of the season at the 8:30 mark of the opening period. Hogg took a feed from Randy McNaught and backhanded his shot past Wichita goaltender Bryan Hogan. Hogg extended his point streak to four games with the goal and it marked his third goal in his last four games.
The Mavericks took a two-goal lead at the 17:07 mark of the first period on one of the best looking goals of the season. Patrick Schafer fed Brandon Smith who was driving the net and Smith batted the puck out of mid-air and into the back of the net as he was falling to the ice.
Missouri held on to the 2-0 lead for the final three minutes of the first period, but the Thunder cut the lead in half just 57 seconds into the second period. Robinson scored a power play goal for his 28th goal of the season on assists from Thomas Beauregard and Aaron Davis. There was no more scoring in the second period and the Thunder had the edge in shots, 28-23, through the first 40 minutes.
The Thunder tied the game, 2-2, at the 4:38 mark of the third period on their second power play goal of the evening. RG Flath scored on assists from Francis Trudel and Matt Summers. After more back and forth action and ith 4:36 remaining in the contest, Matt Summers tallied the game-winning goal on assists from Flath and Jarred Mohr. The Mavericks contended that the puck was kicked in the net, but to no avail and the goal stood. Finally, at the 17:53 mark of the final period, Robinson tallied his second goal of the game on a breakaway to give the Thunder the 4-2 victory.
The Mavericks stay on the road and head to Tulsa on Tuesday, February 28. The Mavericks next home game is Friday, March 2 when they take on the Rapid City Rush at Independence Events Center.
