Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rush entered Saturday's contest looking for a weekend sweep of the Quad City Mallards in front of a sold out crowd at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The tilt featured four point efforts on both sides, including a hat trick by Mallards forward Brandon Marino that led Quad City to a 6-5 shootout win. Despite the loss, the Rush pull to within one point of the 3rd-place Mavericks and maintain three-point lead on the 5th-place Mallards.
After surviving an initial barrage, the Rush turned the tide by potting the first two goals of the game. The first tally came from Konrad Reeder who earned his team-leading 27th goal of the season by faking a slapshot before stepping past Mallard goaltender David Brown for a snipe from the right circle. The Rush doubled their lead near the midway point when Anthony Perdicaro wrapped home his 7th goal of the season while on the powerplay. Just one minute later, the Mallards also picked up a powerplay goal, the first of the night from Brandon Marino. Marino struck again with less than three minutes left in the period, evening the score at 2-2 with a shot from the right faceoff dot.
The Mallards took their first lead of the game just twenty-five seconds into the second period on Mickey Lang's 10th goal of the season. The Rush evened the score two minutes later when Jeff Kyrzakos tapped in a rebound off of a Michael Couch shot. Exactly five minutes into the period, Marino completed the hat trick and earned his fourth point of the night on a play that ended the night for Rush goaltender Tim Boron. David Wilson stepped in for Rapid City, marking his first action in a Rush uniform. The Rush made it a 4-4 contest when Reeder set up veteran Scott Wray who earned his 19th of the year to complete a successful 2-on-1 chance. However, a defensive breakdown by the Rush led to a breakaway for Mallards forward Obi Aduba who gave the Mallards a 5-4 lead heading into the third period.
Rush defenseman Riley Weselowski scored the only goal of the final stanza, blasting a slapshot from the slot area on a play set up by Reeder, forcing extra time.
In the shootout, the Mallards converted on two of four chances while all four Rush skaters were denied by David Brown, giving Quad City the 6-5 triumph.
