Mavericks Fall Short in OT

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks left the ice with another tough loss to the Wichita Thunder on Saturday night. Falling for their fourth straight time to their league rival.

The Mavs had good pace at the top of the first period, keeping the puck in the Wichita zone for a majority of the opening minutes. Then the tempo of the game took a drop and neither team could find their way to the back of the net or the scoreboard through the first twenty minutes of play.

Despite starting the second period on the penalty kill, with Dave Pszenyczny in the box for elbowing, the Mavericks were able to keep the Thunder at bay before they were given their own man-advantaged situation. Team Captain, Sebastien Thinel, got the last touch on the puck to put away a power-play goal for the Mavs, assisted by Andrew Courtney and Matt Stephenson. That goal puts Thinel only two goals away from his 200th career goal for the Central Hockey League.

Holding a 1-0 lead into the third period, the Mavericks put up a fight to keep the Thunder off the board, but were caught off-guard by a short-handed goal served up via forward Ian Lowe to tie the game 1-1. A change in momentum that favored the Thunder gave Wichita the edge to lock in another point to edge the Mavs at the midway mark of the period, this time RG Flath with the lamp-lighter.

But Andrew Courtney was not ready to let the game get away, or his goal-streak for that matter, and launched a beauty to the back of the Thunder net on the power play, securing his fourth power-play goal in three games for the Mavericks. Mike Wilson answered back to Courtney's goal with the third goal of the night for the Thunder, edging the Mavs 3-2.

Just over a minute left in regulation, the Mavericks were handed an important power play opportunity, and took an extra attacker by calling back Shane Owen from the crease, giving Colt King the chance to tie the game for Mavericks 3-3 and send the contest to overtime.

Fighting through a nail-biter of an overtime, the Mavericks finally fell to the Thunder as Matt Summers snuck a shot past Shane Owen to win in the final minute of extra time.

The Missouri Mavericks get their chance at redemption tomorrow night in Wichita, with a 5:05pm puck drop. The Mavs return home on Saturday, January 25th to face the Tulsa Oilers. Tickets are available at the Box Office and Ticketmaster.com.
