Americans Win in Shootout 4-3

Prescott Valley, Arizona - Saturday night was the setting for game two of the three game weekend series between the Allen Americans and Arizona Sundogs, again on the road in Prescott Valley before heading home to close out the series on Monday afternoon. Arizona took the win Friday night in a shootout but the one point Allen earned in regulation allowed the Americans to retain second place in the Central Hockey League standings, just two points behind first place Rapid City.

Arizona lit the lamp right away, scoring on their first shot of the night just 33 seconds into the contest when Paul McIlveen fired a shot past Mark Guggenberger in the Americans net. Assists on the McIlveen goal went to David Rutherford and Brandon Coccimiglio. The French Connection brought the Americans level at 1-1 when Alex Lavoie netted his 18th goal of the year, assisted by Jonathan Lessard and Jamie Schaafsma at 4:16 . Arizona retook the lead when Johan Ryd scored at 13:54, assisted by Sebastian Geoffrion and Jason Morgan. At the end of the first period, Arizona led in shots on goal 14-10 and on the scoreboard as Allen trailed 2-1.

A scoreless second period saw the shots on goal even at 11-11, with Arizona holding the two period edge 25-22 and the lead on the scoreboard 2-1.

The Americans knotted the score quickly in the third period as the French Connection notched a couple of more points when Alex Lavoie netted his 19th goal of the year, assisted by Jonathan Lessard and Tyler Ludwig at 1:49 of the third period to tie the game 2-2. Arizona answered right back when David Rutherford scored at 2:54 unassisted to give the Sundogs back the lead at 3-2. Allen evened the game up again on a goal by Garrett Klotz, his 4th of the year, assisted by Brian McMillin and Trevor Hendrikx at 12:22 . Neither team could net the game winner before regulation ended and overtime was necessary, in the third period the Americans outshot Arizona 16-11 for a three period total 38-36 in favor of Allen.

Extra time was scoreless with Allen holding the overall edge in shots 40-39 and for the second night in a row, the contest was decided by shootout. Arizona netted one goal in the shootout, scored by Kevin Baker but Allen scored two, first it was Darryl Bootland and then Kale Kerbashian had the game winner as Allen earned the extra point with a 4-3 victory.
