Mavericks' Errors Lead to Loss

July 15, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavericks committed four errors, and the San Jose Giants made sure to take advantage of each one as the Giants defeated the Mavs 10-4 Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

The game got off to a good start for the Mavs, taking a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Johermyn Chavez.

Starting pitcher Jon Hesketh was in a zone as well, retiring the first 11 hitters he faced. However, Hesketh walked Charlie Culberson with two outs in the fourth, continuing the inning for Francisco Peguero.

Peguero knocked an RBI triple to right field and scored on a wild relay throw by Kyle Seager to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

The Mavs tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Trevor Coleman. They had runners at the corners with one out, but could not bring home the go-ahead run.

Clutch hitting was another issue for the Mavs, going just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They had Giants pitcher Justin Fitzgerald on the ropes several times throughout the first few innings, but could not come through to put more runs on the board.

The Mavs also failed to put the ball in play consistently, striking out 13 times.

The Giants asserted control by scoring five runs in the fifth, thanks to two Mavericks errors. With a runner at second and one out, Eddy Martinez-Esteve mishandled a routine ground ball at first, allowing a run to score.

After a strikeout, the Giants really took advantage of their extra out, scoring four more times. Juan Perez singled to right field, and Chavez threw the ball into the seats trying to get the runner at third.

Now up 4-2, Ehire Adrianza singled to bring home Perez. Culberson capped the rally with a two-run homer to make it 7-2.

An errant pickoff throw led to another run in the seventh. Michael Sandoval hit a two-run homer in the eighth to put San Jose ahead 10-2.

The Mavs plated runs in the eighth and ninth. Martinez-Esteve reached base on a missed catch by Peguero in right field and scored on a passed ball. Chavez lifted a sac fly in the ninth to finish the scoring.

Hesketh (0-2) certainly didn't get much help from his defense and ended up allowing seven runs, although only one of which was earned. He struck out four and walked one.

Fitzgerald had leave after the fourth, but the Giants bullpen shut down the Mavs the rest of the way. Craig Whitaker (1-0) earned his first win, tossing two scoreless innings.

The Mavs will look to win game at home against San Jose for the first time in five tries Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Come join the Mavs for a Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday, with all beers on sale for $2 from the time the gates open at 6:05 p.m. through the end of the fifth inning.
