Lancaster JetHawks News Release
In a see-saw game that saw both teams score runs in bunches, Modesto plated three runs in the top of the ninth to escape Clear Channel Stadium with a 14-11 triumph over the JetHawks Wednesday. The JetHawks seized control of the contest in the bottom of the second with seven runs off Nuts starter Kenny Durst. Lee Cruz blasted a solo home run to start the frame. Lancaster received RBI singles from Andy Simunic, Barry Butera and Jay Austin before Brian Pellegrini belted a two-run homer to put Lancaster in front 7-0.
Albert Cartwright socked a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to extend Lancaster's lead to 8-0.
But the Nuts chipped away at the deficit by scoring two runs off JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Trailing 8-5, Modesto struck for six runs on six hits in the top of the seventh and grabbed an 11-8 advantage. Erik Wetzel and Jordan Pacheco each hit two-run singles in the frame for Modesto and Michael Zuanich smacked a solo home run.
But Lancaster evened the score with a three-run inning in the bottom of the seventh. Barry Butera hit a two-run single off Nuts reliever Casey Weathers and Cartwright delivered an infield single off Kurt Yacko, which plated Simunic and knotted the game at 11-11.
Zuanich singled with the bases loaded in the ninth to drive in the winning runs and cap a 4-for-6 night at the plate with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. David Flores equaled a career-high with four hits in five at-bats for Lancaster.
Yacko (6-2) earned the win in relief for Modesto. Brian Wabick (2-4) took the loss for Lancaster.
With the win, Modesto improved to 10-10 in the second half and 47-43 overall. The JetHawks fell to 9-11 and 32-58 overall.
