SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - The Mississippi RiverKings scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Missouri Mavericks 4-2 at DeSoto Civic Center Friday night. Ryan Held had a pair of goals and Darrell Stoddard had two assists for the RiverKings who improved to 18-15-4. Mavericks' forward Jeff Christian had a goal and an assist and extended his scoring streak to a CHL-high 14 games. The Mavericks fell to 17-18-3 on the season, but will have a chance to rebound in a game against the RiverKings Saturday night.
"It was a real gutsy performance by a very short bench," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "I was very pleased with the play of (Gerry) Festa in his first game with the team."
Goaltender Gerry Festa started in his first game for the Mavericks and stopped 23 of 26 shots in the loss.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period in which there were only 11 total shots on goal. Mississippi had six shots to the Mavericks five shots and neither team was able to convert on one power play chance each.
After the halfway point, the goals started coming. Missouri forward Jeff MacDermid had a power play goal at the 11:01 mark of the period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Christian gave the Mavericks' a two-goal lead on an unassisted tally at the 16:43 mark of the second period.
In what proved to be the turning point of the game, Held scored at 19:59 of the second period to cut the Mavericks' lead to 2-1 just before the intermission.
Mississippi continued the momentum in the third and reeled off three goals in the final period. Bobby Chaumont tied the game on a power play goal at the 4:45 mark, and late in the third period, Anders Strome gave the home team their first lead with a goal at the 16:46 mark.
Held added an empty netter in the final minute of play to give the RiverKings a 4-2 win over Missouri.
The teams will meet up again Saturday night before heading to Tulsa on Tuesday. Missouri returns to Independence Events Center to take on the Rapid City Rush on Friday, January 29. For tickets call (866) 443-8849 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
