INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - It took over 90 minutes of play, but the Missouri Mavericks were handed a 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday night against the Arizona Sundogs in Game 5 of the opening round of the 2014 CHL Playoffs. The Sundogs lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 over the Mavericks.
Missouri brought amateur Peter Massar onto the roster Saturday night, filling space in the roster from a suspended Sebastien Thinel and an absent John-Scott Dickson, who has not made a playoff appearance since Game 1 for the Mavs.
The Mavericks and Sundogs were scoreless through the first period, with shots on goal neck in neck at 13-12 favoring the Mavericks.
Michael Forney was the first to strike for the Sundogs at 7:40 of the second period to take a 1-0 lead for Arizona. Mike Ramsay and Matt Stephenson were credited with the helpers n Castonguay's second goal of the playoffs. Forney posted another goal on an Arizona power play at 13:22 to recapture the lead for the Sundogs 2-1.
Mavericks' amateur Peter Massar scored twice in the third period to tie the game at 2 and then take the lead 3-2 for Missouri in his first professional game. The Mavericks were poised with a 1-goal lead to skate away with a definitive Game 5 victory, but armed with an extra attacker in the final minute of the game, the Sundogs' Justin Pender connected with a shot to slip a game-tying goal past Shane Owen with only 29 seconds remaining on the clock in regulation.
The Mavs and Sundogs battled through 20 minutes of extra time without a winner in the first overtime, sending the contest to a second overtime period. Missouri was outshot 8-3 by the Sundogs in the second overtime, and Johan Ryd was the skater to finally end the game midway through the period when he scored on Shane Owen to take Game 5 for the Sundogs.
The Mavericks continue their best-of-seven series against the Sundogs in Game 5 on Tuesday, April 15th at the Independence Events Center. Playoff tickets are available in person at the Box Office, and online at TicketMaster.com.
