Sundogs Take Epic Battle in Double Overtime

Prescott Valley, AZ - The Arizona Sundogs took the 4-3 win in an epic double overtime battle Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center against the Missouri Mavericks.

After a scoreless first period Mike Forney scored putting Arizona on the board 7:40 into the second period. Matt McCready and David Rutherford were credited with the assists. Less than a minute later Eric Castonguay answered back while on the power play, evening the score after Mark Isherwood was called for high sticking. The Sundogs took back the lead after forty minutes when Forney scored his second of the night from Kevin Baker and Rutherford. Arizona's second goal came while on the man-advantage when Matt Stephenson was sent off for cross checking.

7:23 into the third Missouri knotted the game and eventually took the upper hand. Pete Massar tallied the Mavericks two goals with the first posted at 7:23 and then followed up at 13:37. With 29 seconds remaining in regulation and with the extra attacker Arizona's Justin Pender scored from Paul Mcilveen and Rutherford forcing the game in what turned into two overtime rounds. Halfway through the second overtime Johan Ryd scored the game winning goal and regained the series lead against the Mavericks 3-2.

Andrew Engelage remained top notch blocking 45 shots. The Sundogs outshot the Mavericks 56-48 and both teams were 1-4 on the power play. Arizona will take to the road again for game six against the Mavericks at the Independence Event Center on Tuesday.
