INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Mississippi RiverKings scored five third-period goals and defeated the Missouri Mavericks, 5-1, Sunday afternoon in front of another sold out crowd of 5,728 fans at Independence Events Center. Missouri held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brett Hammond, but the RiverKings exploded for five goals in the third to win. Elias Godoy had a pair of goals and Louis Dumont had a goal and two assists as the RiverKings (29-23-7) moved into fourth place in the Northern Conference standings. Missouri (29-25-5) fell to fifth place and leads the Tulsa Oilers by three points for the final playoff spot.

Missouri controlled the opening 10 minutes of the first period and the work paid off at the 9:45 mark when Hammond netted his 11th goal of the season. The Mavericks were on their second power play of the game when Jeff MacDermid found Jeff Christian at the top of the right circle; Christian faked a slap shot and passed the puck to Hammond who was wide open on the backdoor. It proved to be the only goal of the period and the Mavericks outshot the RiverKings 14-6 through one frame.

Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger kept the RiverKings off the scoreboard in the second period by blocking all 16 shots he faced. The RiverKings outshot the Mavs 16-6 in the second, but Missouri held on to the 1-0 lead.

Dumont opened the floodgates and tied the game early into the third period when his slap shot from the right circle snuck in the far post and past the blocker of Effinger. Dumont's was the first of three power play goals in the third. Ryan Held netted Mississippi's only even-strength goal at the 7:18 mark of the third period in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Godoy scored his goals back-to-back and just 61 seconds apart. His first was on the power play to make the score 3-1, and his second was a shorthanded goal at 8:52. Darryl Stoddard finalized the scoring at 5-1 with 2:26 remaining in the game when his power play goal snuck through the legs of Effinger.

The five goals allowed in a period marked the most allowed for the Mavericks this season. The teams finished tied in shots at 34 each. Mississippi finished 3 for 11 on the power play while the Mavericks finished 1 for 7 and extended their streak to eight consecutive games with at least one power play goal.

The Mavericks have four off days before the final two home games of the regular season. Missouri will host the CHL-leading Odessa Jackalopes for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13. Friday is Fan Appreciation Night and the Mavs will wear specialty jerseys. Saturday is final home game of the regular season, and the team will host a fundraiser for Ryan Christian, Jeff Christian's daughter, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment at St. Jude's hospital.
