First Period Flurry Leads Mudbugs Past IceRays 4-1

March 7, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

A two-minute, three-goal flurry in the first period was more than enough for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in a 4-1 victory over the Corpus Christi IceRays at the American Bank Center on Sunday afternoon. Ken Carroll turned in another brilliant performance with 36 saves to lead the Bugs to victory. The IceRays fell to 26-24-7 on the season, and had their season-long, five-game home winning streak snapped against the same team it began against. The IceRays remained two points ahead of the Killer Bees for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference with a game in hand. Corpus Christi also stayed eight points back of the Texas Brahmas with a game in hand, and seven back with even games played of the Laredo Bucks in the race for the third spot in the Southern Conference.

The IceRays would like to remind fans that their next home game, originally scheduled for Friday, March 12th vs. the Arizona Sundogs has been moved to Tuesday, March 9th. Game tickets designated for March 12th will be accepted on Tuesday. The game remains at 7:05pm. It is another Two-For-Tuesday with the IceRays. A mostly evenly played first period was defined by a two-minute segment dominated by the Mudbugs, which gave them early control of the game. The Bugs got three goals inside 1:54 to take a commanding lead. Jim Jorgensen got it started at 8:01 on a two-on-one rush to make it 1-0 Mudbugs. The Bugs made it 2-0 27 seconds later when James DeLory scored on a rebound to increase the lead. Just over a minute later, on a power play, the Bugs got a rebound goal from Brett Smith to make it 3-0 midway through the first period. The IceRays came back with seven unanswered shots and hit a crossbar to close the frame, but the damage had been done and the Bugs took their three-goal lead into the intermission break.

The teams played a scoreless second period with the Bugs outshooting the IceRays 11-10 in the frame, and the score remained 3-0 Bossier-Shreveport heading into the third.

The IceRays finally got past Carroll in the third period when Jereme Tendler scored on a slapshot from the blue line at 11:49, but that's as close as the Rays would get. Corpus Christi threw everything they had at Carroll with 16 third period shots, but he closed the door, and Travis Clayton added an empty net goal at 18:43 to give the Mudbugs the 4-1 win.

Kevin Beech (15-8-3) took the loss, making 26saves on 29 shots. Ken Carroll (14-7-3) earned the win making 36 saves on 37 shots. The IceRays power play went 0-3 and the Bugs went 1-2. The IceRays outshot the Bugs 37-30 in the game.
