Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored three first period goals on their way to snapping a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays Sunday afternoon at the American Bank Center. The win clinched a Northern Conference playoff spot for the Mudbugs, who improved to 34-20-4 on the season.
Ken Carroll was stingy in goal for the Mudbugs, making 36 saves as he tied Tony Martino for second in CHL history with 187 career victories. Jim Jorgensen and Brett Smith each finished with a goal and an assist in the game, while James DeLory and Travis Clayton both added goals as well.
The Mudbugs jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead in this one with three goals in a span of less than two minutes. Jim Jorgensen started if off for the 'Bugs at 8:01, beating Kevin Beech low to the glove side to finish off a 2-on-1 break with Brett Smith. They added to the lead just 27 seconds later when DeLory jammed in the rebound of Jamie Milam's long shot from the point to make it 2-0. The Mudbugs extended the lead to 3-0 with a powerplay goal as Smith picked a loose puck out of a scrum in front and backhanded it past Beech to finish off the three-goal barrage.
Neither team scored in the second period, but Bossier-Shreveport killed off two Corpus Christi powerplays and outshot the IceRays 11-10 to maintain the 3-0 lead into the third.
The 'Bugs outshot the Rays 5-0 in the early going of the third, but Corpus eventually got on the board when Jereme Tendler scored on a long shot through traffic to break up Carroll's shutout bid at 11:49. Travis Clayton then sealed the victory with an empty net goal at 18:43 of the third as the Mudbugs secured a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive year.
Ken Carroll is now 14-7-3 this year after moving within eight victories of passing Rod Branch (194) as the winningest netminder in CHL history. Kevin Beech stopped 26 shots in the loss as Corpus Christi outshot Bossier-Shreveport 37-30. The Mudbugs converted one of two powerplay chances, while the IceRays were 0 for 3.
The Mudbugs will now take five days off before finishing the regular season with six games in eight days. The 'Bugs will be back on the ice Saturday night in Mississippi against the RiverKings at 7:05 pm, with radio coverage beginning at 6:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL.
