Mavericks' Cold Bats bring Season to Close

September 10, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Needing a win to keep their season alive, the Mavericks couldn't get much get going at the plate or keep the Quakes quiet as Rancho Cucamonga prevailed 7-1 Thursday night at the Epicenter.

The loss ended the Mavericks season, and after sweeping the series, the Quakes will face Lake Elsinore in the next round of the playoffs.

After piling up 12 runs the night before, the Quakes stayed hot on offense. They broke a scoreless tie in the third with three runs.

Alberto Rosario knocked an RBI single, and on the very next pitch, Luis Jimenez connected on a two-run homer.

The Mavs got on the board for the first and only time in the fifth. Denny Almonte doubled to start the inning, and two batters later came home on an RBI groudout by Shaver Hansen.

The next three men all reached base, loading them up for Rich Poythress. Quakes pitcher Orangel Arenas got out of the jam, as Poythress grounded out to second base to end the inning.

The Quakes began to pull away in the sixth. Gabe Jacobo mashed a long solo homer, and Kevin Ramos added a two-out RBI triple.

Dillon Baird capped another big night with a two-run homer in the eighth. Over the two game series, the Quakes wound up hitting eight homers.

The Mavs didn't put up much of a fight after they left the bases loaded in the fifth. They only had two hits the rest of the night and did not put a runner in scoring position over the final four innings.

The season came to an end when Hansen sent a ground ball up the middle. Darwin Perez made a diving stop, flipping the ball from his back to second base to force out the lead runner and end the game.

Although Arenas (1-0) struggled against the Mavs during the regular season, he turned it around when his team needed it the most. He allowed one run and five hits over five innings to claim the win.

Jon Hesketh allowed five runs--four earned--over 5.2 innings while taking the loss for the Mavs. He surrendered seven hits with two talks and four strikeouts.

The 2010 campaign might not have ended with a league championship, but it was another successful season. Keep checking www.hdmavs.com for updates throughout the off-season as well as a complete look back at the 2010 season. Thank you for your support of High Desert Mavericks Baseball!
