Mavericks Can't Connect in Game 3: Fall 3-1 to Sundogs

April 10, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks could not pull together enough of an offensive effort to fight back against the onslaught of shots on goal delivered by the Arizona Sundogs on Wednesday night in Game 3 of Round 1 in the 2014 Central Hockey League Playoffs.

The Sundogs held a dramatic lead in shots on goal throughout a majority of the contest, finishing the game ahead 41-32, scoring on three of those attempts. The Mavericks first period power-play goal was not enough to match 3 unanswered Sundogs goals in the second period, and the Mavs dropped the game 3-1, giving the Sundogs a 2-1 lead in the opening round series.

Mavericks goaltender Shane Owen put out a spectacular performance in the opening period, halting 18 aggressive attempts by Arizona. Forward Andrew Courtney gave Missouri the first tally of the game with a power-play goal seven minutes into the period, assisted by Matt Stephenson and Eric Castonguay. Courtney's goal expands his point streak to 18 games (30 points) and his goal streak to 8 games (11 goals), including stats from the end of the regular season.

Leading 1-0 heading into the second frame, it was not long before the game quickly got away from the Mavericks. The Sundogs fired away 3 unanswered goals, first with a power-play goal by David Rutherford at 8:26 to tie the game 1-1, then another lamp-lighter by Michael Trebish at 12:04, and finally a definitive third goal by Kevin Baker to carry a 3-1 lead to the end of the period over Missouri.

The Mavericks attempted to reload their efforts at the tail-end of the second period, and came into the third with fresh legs and a focus to put more pucks in Arizona goaltender Andrew Engelage's direction, but unable to hold onto the puck in their attacking zone long enough to make any viable plays, the Mavericks were caught constantly regrouping against the Sundogs defense.

In an almost all-too-perfect scenario, the Mavs were handed a 5-on-3 power play opportunity late in the third period when Sundogs' Brian Cameron was sent to the penalty box for roughing, and shortly thereafter, Paul McIlveen joined his teammate in the sin bin for cross-checking. The Mavericks had to score in this situation, they had to get back in the game and make a strong move... but they could not connect with the back of the net to pose a threat to the Sundogs leading by 2 goals in the final minutes of the game.

The Mavericks must win 1 more game to secure another game at home and send this series back to the Independence Events Center, voted by the league as "the toughest building to win in," packed by the "best fans" in the Central Hockey League.

The Mavericks continue their best-of-seven series against the Sundogs on Friday, April 11th at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, AZ at 9:05pm (CT). Official Missouri Mavericks Away Game Watch Parties are held at Strikerz Entertainment Center. Food and drink specials available for all Mavericks fans in attendance!
