Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Goaltender Gerry Festa and the Missouri Mavericks shutout the Allen Americans Saturday night, 3-0, in front of another sold out crowd of 5,800 fans at Independence Events Center. Festa stopped all 25 shots faced in his second win with Missouri and first shutout victory. The Mavericks now have four shutouts on the season and improved their overall record to 19-20-3. Mike Burgoyne, Jeff MacDermid and Braden Walls scored for the Mavericks who continue their home stand Tuesday night when they host the Colorado Eagles at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m.
After a scoreless opening 18 minutes, the Mavericks jumped out to the lead on a slap shot by Mike Burgoyne. Missouri was on the power play, and Burgoyne let a shot rip from the point that went through traffic and beat Americans' goaltender Charlie Effinger. Missouri earned another power play goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the first period. MacDermid found space as he was streaking down the right wing and snapped a shot low to the blocker side that beat Effinger. Missouri kept the Americans to just nine shots on goal and held the 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
The Mavericks extended their lead in the second period on Walls' second goal in as many games. He took a feed from Brett Hammond who was behind the net and one-timed the puck for his third goal of the season. The goal came at the 2:18 mark and proved to be the only goal of the second period. Through two periods, Missouri was outshooting Allen 22-16 and held their 3-0 lead.
Festa stayed strong in net and earned the shutout by stopping all nine shots he faced in the third period. The Mavericks had eight shots on goal in the third, but were unable to get another puck past Effinger.
Missouri was 2-5 on the power play and killed all four of the Americans' chances. The shutout marked the Mavericks first shutout since a 1-0 win over the Laredo bucks on December 11, 2009.
The Mavericks play their third game of a six-game home stand Tuesday night when they host the Colorado Eagles at Independence Events Center. It's a Price Chopper "Two for Tuesday" in which fans can purchase a terrace or club level ticket and get one free by coming to the IEC Box Office and showing their Price Chopper card on the day of the game.
