Mavericks Beat RiverKings In Shootout, 4-3

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Mississippi RiverKings, 4-3, in a shootout Tuesday night in front of 4,141 fans at Independence Events Center. Mavericks' forward Jeff Christian tallied a goal and two assists and Toby Lafrance had a pair of goals including the game winner in the shootout. Missouri (25-23-4) moved into fifth place in the Northern Conference standings with 54 points. The Mavericks trail Mississippi (25-21-7) by just three points in the standings for the fourth spot in the Northern Conference.

The first period didn't see a lot of action. A total of 10 shots were taken, seven for the RiverKings and three for the Mavericks. Neither team was able to convert on one power play each.

Mississippi's Elias Godoy unlocked the scoreless tie at the 4:46 mark of the second period when he took a feed from Bobby Chaumont and blasted a slap shot past Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger. At the 15:51 mark of the second, Mississippi took a 2-0 lead on Glenn Detulleo's eighth goal of the season. Missouri bounced back when Lafrance netted his first of the evening on the power play to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 19:24 mark.

Christian scored his team-leading 27th goal of the season eight minutes into the final period on a nice individual effort. He took the puck at the Mavericks' blue line, skated into the Mississippi zone and danced around a pair of defenders before slipping a wrist shot past RiverKings' goaltender Mark Sibbald.

Mississippi quickly rebounded and took a 3-2 lead only 1:16 after the Christian goal. Ryan Held scored the power play goal when he redirected a pass from Kevin Truelson into the back of the net. Mississippi held on to the one-goal lead until the final two minutes of regulation when Karl Sellan roofed a shot over the shoulder of Sibbald to tie the game at three. Sellan's goal was a five-on-three and marked Missouri's second power play goal of the game.

In the overtime period, both teams were awarded power plays however neither was able to score forcing a shootout. After an unsuccessful effort on their first attempt, the Mavericks scored three straight including Lafrance's game winner and Effinger stopped three of five shots for the win.

Missouri is now 9-2 in shootouts this season and the nine wins are the most in the CHL. The Mavericks 2 for 9 on the power play and killed 6 of 7 of the RiverKings' power plays. Missouri has now won four straight Tuesday home games.

The Mavericks will host a pair of games this weekend at Independence Events Center. The Tulsa Oilers head to Independence Friday night and the ZOOperstars! will perform throughout the game. Friday night is also the first of two $1 Hot Dog Nights.
