Fairbanks Grizzlies News Release
Fairbanks, AK 1-27-09 Ricky Bertz, General Manager and owner of the Fairbanks grizzlies announced the signing of Matthew Pike for the 2009 season. Matt, originally from Fort Wayne Indiana is no stranger to the game of Football. Matt played college football for Purdue University for 4 years playing in 38 games as quarterback. During his 4 year career, he was names player of game (11) times, and ranks 16th on Purdue's all time passing list.
Shortly after finishing college, matt signed as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys and was in camp before eventually going to play in NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy. Matt then turned his playing career from outdoor to indoor where he played for the AFL's Tampa Bay Storm. Matt later played in the af2 for the Louisville Fire, Quad city Steamwheelers, and the Peoria Pirates when they won the Arena Cup Championship.
At 6'3" and 212 pounds, Coach Sean Ponder says Matt posses the ability to Survey the field over the larger offensive lineman that have signed with the Grizzlies thus far. Matt played for Coach Ponder while in Quad City, and feels that he will enter training camp with an existing Knowledge of Ponders offense. Coach Ponder was one of the reasons Matt Elected to come play in Fairbanks this season, as Matt has a lot of Confidence in Ponders ability to have continued success on and off the field.
Away from the field, Matt views himself as an easy going individual who enjoys time with friends and family. Matt enjoys playing golf, and listening to all kinds of music. Matt resides in Peoria, ILL with his girlfriend Lorenna Giles. In addition to playing Quarterback for the Grizzlies, Matt is a sales representative working in the Grizzlies front office.
