Mathews Mesmerizes on Mound, Justus Delivers Four Hits in Win

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino got six no-hit innings from starter Simon Mathews and a four-hit game from shortstop Connor Justus en route to an 8-1 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday. The victory evened the series at a game apiece as the Sixers improved to 51-53 on the season and 18-16 in the second half.

Inland Empire got three runs in the top of the first aided by three errors by the Rawhide (51-53, 14-20) highlighted by a RBI single from Connor Justus, the opening salvo in his first four-hit game with the Sixers. The Sixers added a run in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth against starter Matt Peacock (3-2) to take a commanding 8-0 lead. All the while Mathews was carving up the Rawhide. The righty from West Haven, CT was perfect through three frames before walking Stephen Smith to open the fourth. He walked a batter and hit a batter but had not allowed a hit until the top of the seventh when Jazz Chisolm lifted a homer to right to end the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing of the bat. The Rawhide did not score again. Mathews finished the night with a line of: 6.2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, HBP, 7Ks. Justus finished the night at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Alberto Triunfel had two hits with a double and a RBI and a stolen base. Mathews improved to 2-3 with a victory. Jo Adell and Triunfel each stole bases for the Sixers who went 6-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
