San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes blasted three home runs and posted their league-leading 11th shutout of the season in a 10-0 rout of the San Jose Giants on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. With the loss, the Giants (46-59 overall, 12-23 second half) dropped two out of three in the series and fell for the 12th time in 15 games to the South Division-leading Quakes this season.
Heath Quinn (2-for-4) was the only San Jose player to finish the game with more than one hit.
Leo Crawford (4-0) earned the win for Rancho Cucamonga after tossing five scoreless innings to begin the game. Crawford allowed four hits, walked none and struck out four during his start. Yeison Cespedes (2 IP) and Logan Salow (2 IP) then combined on four scoreless innings of relief to complete the shutout for the Quakes.
The Giants threatened early as back-to-back singles from Jacob Heyward and Quinn to begin the bottom of the first put runners on first and second with none out. Crawford though came back with three consecutive strikeouts of Gio Brusa, Wander Franco and Bryce Johnson to retire the side.
Joey Marciano started on the mound for San Jose and began his start with two scoreless innings before Rancho Cucamonga pushed across three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Hamlet Marte led off the frame with a ringing double down the left field line before Gavin Lux singled to put runners on the corners. After Lux stole second, Marciano walked Omar Estevez to load the bases. Cody Thomas followed with a fly ball into shallow left center that was dropped by shortstop Brandon Van Horn. One run scored on the play as Marte came home although Van Horn recovered to still force out Estevez at second for the first out of the inning. A strikeout of Cristian Santana followed, but Connor Wong then stepped to the plate and laced a double down the left field line to bring home both Lux and Thomas for a 3-0 Quakes advantage.
Rancho Cucamonga then homered in each of the next three innings to break the game open. Logan Landon led off the top of the fourth with a home run to left off of Marciano to make it 4-0. An inning later, Marciano issued a one-out walk to Thomas before Santana stepped to the plate and launched a towering two-run home run to left. Then in the sixth with reliever Connor Overton on the mound, Jared Walker drew a leadoff walk, Estevez singled with two outs before Thomas connected for a three-run home run to right center stretching the lead to 9-0.
The Quakes scored their 10th and final run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth as a Marte single and two walks loaded the bases with one out before a Santana RBI groundout.
Meanwhile, the Giants managed only three hits after the first inning. Van Horn singled to leadoff the bottom of the third, but was promptly erased when the next batter, Heyward, grounded into a double play. In the fourth, Johnson clubbed a two-out double to deep left center, but was stranded at second. San Jose then didn't pick-up another hit until Quinn led off the bottom of the ninth with a single into center. Quinn moved to second on a Brusa groundout, but advanced no further as Franco flied out to shallow center and Johnson popped out to first to end the game.
Marciano (0-3) suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four.
